When considering a career as a social worker, it is never too early to start looking for volunteer opportunities. Social work is a field that is built on the cardinal principle of caring for your charges; working in volunteer environments can help build the kindness and empathy that is so crucial to a successful social worker. With hundreds of volunteer opportunities available in a less than stellar economy, there is much for a future social worker to choose from.

Medical volunteer opportunities exist even for those not on tracks to build a medical career. Social workers so often work with hospitals, clinics and long term care centers that having volunteer experience in a medical setting could do nothing but benefit a future social worker. Volunteer jobs as activities assistants in nursing homes or pet therapy guides in long term care centers will help the future social worker become acclimated to what some might view as a depressing environment; namely, skilled nursing facilities for adults and children alike that require more care than can be administered in a home setting. Youth volunteer opportunities abound in these environments where interaction with friendly faces is vital to the well-being of patients.

Volunteer opportunities for teens are also extremely helpful for those considering a career in social work. While many social workers do work in medical environments, some work with youth – children and teens – in both educational and home settings. Volunteer jobs working alongside teens can help the future social worker to understand the very people they will soon be working to assist. Volunteering in schools and other educational facilities will, again, gain invaluable experience for a social worker who has never volunteered alongside children.

Summer volunteer jobs exist for those still following their own educational path to become a social worker. During breaks from college, there are many volunteer opportunities available, both home and abroad, that will help prepare those considering careers in social work for the path they have chosen.
