Department Director of Voluntary Services

The voluntary service Department is responsible for developing and maintaining an inclusive program for voluntary services in collaboration with the community. The Department Director of Voluntary Services is entrusted upon the task of supervising, coordinating and planning the voluntary service programs. The responsibilities are further augmented by community functions with a sole aim to provide necessary details about the service that particular organization offers.

Nature of the Work

First of all, this work demands a great deal of administrative skills, and a person who wants to pursue his career in this line must fit the bill. He is accountable for the performance of his team so he should be ready to bear the pressure. He attends all the meetings pertaining to volunteer services and he also speaks to the whole team about how they can best play their role in the volunteer programs to increase the productivity of the organization as a whole.

Department Director of Voluntary Services has to perform the following crucial tasks and these are:
  1. He is responsible for performing complex tasks that involve high degree of planning.
  2. He has to maintain an ideal coordination among diverse volunteer programs so that there will be no room for any kind of confusion.
  3. He also supervises and controls the performance of the trainees whether they are doing their job effectively or not.
  4. He is also involved in the training and orientation programs of the employees; he suggests various ways to improve the performance of the trainees.
  5. He also makes extensive plans with respect to volunteer services and prioritizes the works according to the significance of the work.
  6. He also adopts different procedures and these procedures will be implemented in the work depending on the complexity of the job.
  7. He also assesses the performance of an existing community or public volunteer programs and then sees the negative spots in them.
  8. He is also responsible for expanding staff members as per the requirements and also endorses the image of the concerning organization.
  9. The Department Director also represents the interests of the organization and he speaks on the behalf of the company.
  10. He also works as liaison for the company when it comes to a plan about a project of social interest.
  11. He also conducts various events with an aim to collect funds from various resources.
  12. He is also liable to conduct all reward recognition program and he also allocates the responsibilities of the job among different volunteer officers.
  13. He also makes reports of the annual budget of the organization and matches the same with standardized budget.
  14. The Department head also compiles the reports of different departments of the organization and observes the defaults.
  15. He looks after the departmental designs and implementation of various volunteer programs.
Pre-requisites for the post of Department Director of Voluntary Services

The department director has to handle complicated tasks and for this, he is required to have the following skills:
  • He should be acquainted with all kinds of community, social and human resource agencies.
  • He should have the knowledge of dictums and procedures of human resource management so that he can handle any discrepancy.
  • He should know the nature and scope of voluntary services and he should be competent enough to support the organization in all conditions.
  • He should have excellent communication skills and a flair for writing so that he can make use of any of the alternative as per the requirement.
  • He must have a graduate degree from a distinguished university and the candidates with degree in social work and human resource management are normally preferred.
  • If he has any kind of prior experience from a reputed organization it will be an added advantage for him.
  • He should possess excellent interpersonal skills so that he can address the diverse needs of different individuals.
  • He should be capable enough to maintain good coordination among volunteers and staff members.
  • The candidates with strong conflict management skills are usually preferred.
  • A person who understands the issues like harm reduction, population, health and how these can affect the volunteer programs are normally favored.
  • A departmental head to work under hostile conditions so that he should be capable enough to work in an unfriendly environment.
Scope for Department Director

Volunteer service provides a fantastic opportunity to work for other people's well being and it is true that this kind of service is not associated with monetary gains, but this service will give you immense satisfaction to the core. Different organizations adopt a different code of conduct for the volunteer's departmental head which is obligatory in all respects.

The Departmental Director has to work in close coordination with the whole team and he usually motivates the team to put their best efforts so that they can do the best they can for the most people. He divides the team into different divisions such as community development and housing development. All of these departments directly report to him and he evaluates the performance of each department.

In addition to all, the departmental director has to check the flaws in volunteer programs and he plans how the negativity can be eliminated. He also incorporates the endeavors of the whole team into the objectives of an organization. He is known for his flexible approach and he can also modify the existing plan in order to smooth out the activities.

So, the departmental director has to perform crucial tasks and he represents the interests of the group and company. He should possess the required skills so that he can cope with the hostile environment.
