Volunteer Legal Jobs
A legal volunteer’s job involves maintaining a high caseload of appeals and first instance cases, preparing legal briefs on RSD appeal submissions and submitting them upon approval of the project director. A legal volunteer provides legal aid to refugee claimants throughout the refugee status determination (RSD) process before the government maintains and supervises the scheduling of workshops for refugees and refugee claimants. A legal volunteer ensure all clients have a fair hearing and access to an RSD procedure that complies with due process both in first instance and appeals cases.
A legal volunteer provides ongoing consultations and representations (as well as an occasional mediation) for low income eligible individuals who have legal problems with most civil matters. A legal volunteer conducts research on country of origin situations and refugee law jurisprudence. A legal volunteer provides the legal community with innovative ways to carry on its long tradition of pro bono service through individual representation of clients, working at legal clinics, and assisting in community projects.
A legal volunteer requires a bachelor’s degree in law or other master’s degrees or equivalent experience in a related field. A legal volunteer should be able to attend staff meetings and create office procedures as necessities arise. A legal volunteer must have experience of working with victims of trauma and vulnerable populations. They must be fluent in both oral and written English.
