Job Description

The Sr. Director, Volunteer Engagement and Annual Giving is responsible for implementing a comprehensive affinity group and mid-level donor cultivation and stewardship strategy to advance the growth of these key donor segments, increasing satisfaction, retention, and referrals. Working alongside the mega donor, major donor and mid-level donor fundraisers, the senior director will develop strategies to engage Opportunity’s donor affinity groups and deepen their commitment to Opportunity’s mission through effective engagement, compelling treatment streams, specialized programming and meaningful volunteer opportunities.

In addition, the senior director will develop and manage a comprehensive fundraising strategy to exponentially grow the mid-level donor program, doubling the portfolio size over the next several years to meet the organization’s fundraising goals.

This is a Chicago-based position.

The ideal candidate will have several years experience creating and implementing successful volunteer engagement programs within a medium to large sized organization. This person will interact daily with Major Donors, Mid Level Donors, the Marketing Team and the Philanthropy Teams. We are seeking a forward-thinking, self-starter, and results-oriented individual who is passionate about attracting, engaging and retaining volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Volunteer Engagement

Develop and implement effective donor treatment plans for affinity groups focused on maximizing donor satisfaction and long term donor engagement. Opportunity sees effective donor treatment plans as a key part of its go-forward success.

Manage and strengthen key relationships (Board of Governors, Ambassadors Council, Young Ambassadors for Opportunity) and other existing affinity groups towards increasing satisfaction, retention and referrals.

Increase membership size and strength of existing affinity groups through long-term strategic planning, marketing, cultivation, recruitment, revenue, and engagement strategies.

Analyze existing donor segments and determine if we should open new affinity groups that would grow engagement/revenue.

Serve as the primary organization contact for each affinity group, specifically working with the mega donor and major donor fundraising teams helping activate, recognize and engage affinity group donors.

Design new initiatives that will welcome new prospects and demonstrate appreciation to current affinity group members.

Manage and implement additional affinity group outreach and engagement opportunities that help realize Opportunity’s overall fundraising goals.

Create and implement a full calendar of affinity group engagement events in partnership with the Marketing department, ranging from exclusive briefings and education opportunities, fundraising events, socials, private Insight Trips, private sessions at Summit events, and volunteer opportunities.

Work collaboratively within the Philanthropy teams to develop meaningful donor recognition programs in corporating industry best practices.

Continuously track, evaluate and seek to improve volunteer engagement, impact work, resources, and capacity as it relates to affinity groups.

Mid-Level Donor Program

Responsible for meeting or exceeding annual fund-raising goals through the cultivation and retention of mid-level donors by a team of Opportunity’s mid-level donor reps.

Plan and implement moves management strategies (discover, cultivate, connect, invite, acknowledge, fulfill, service) to ensure assigned donors are cultivated towards their full giving potential, leading them toward becoming major donors to the organization. Ensuring a smooth and effective transfer of qualified donors to the appropriate fundraising team. Aligning communication strategy to donor expectations.

Develop annual strategic contact plans.

In compliance with approved mid-level donor strategy, set specific, quantifiable and measurable performance goals for fundraising, moves management/ask, and establish priorities for rep’s assigned managed donor and prospect donor lists (MDL & MPL).

Manage overall mid-level donor experience by incorporating industry best practices, ensuring mid-level fundraisers are creating and delivering a best in class experience for mid-Level donors in order to increase retention, overall donor satisfaction, long-term value, and donor referrals. Ensuring appropriate reporting is provided to donors.

Partner with Philanthropy and Marketing teams in the development and execution of the mid-level donor strategy and the establishment of annual communication and program strategies and marketing calendars. Ensuring donor calls complement marketing materials and programs.


Develop and lead a growing team of mid-level donor fundraisers

Manage donors who engage in short and long-term volunteer roles


Minimum 7-10 years of related experience working in development, fundraising, communications, and event management.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

Experience managing a fundraising team

Experience managing in a matrix environment through influence and relationship bulding

Previous experience managing affinity groups, alumni programs, or other special interest programs required.

Previous experience creating and executing annual campaigns.

Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills including public speaking experience.

Ability to accurately manage, analyze, and report on data.

Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to successfully engage at all levels of an organization.

Possess a decisive and inclusive decision style with the ability to manage small details while focusing on the big picture. An organized manager, comfortable recommending strategic direction and implementing that direction on his/her own.

Strong organization and project management skills, incorporating proactive follow-up communication.

Proficient in of Microsoft Office (Excel, Work, Outlook, and PowerPoint is essential; experience using Microsoft CRM or comparable fundraising database software preferred.

Demonstrated passion for transformative work, humility, high integrity, and mission-driven with an ability to inspire others.

Passionate about Opportunity International’s mission and able to promote and communicate the vision, mission and values to external and internal stakeholders.
