General Purpose of Position:
To build young disciples for Christ by developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to children’s ministry (in the areas of worship, group building, discipleship, mission, and outreach) while serving as a spiritual leader and role model.
The Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM) reports to the Senior Pastor for spiritual and ministry guidance. The Senior Pastor, in cooperation with the Staff Parish Relations Committee, provides an annual evaluation of the DCM’s performance. Attendance at the following meetings is expected: Staff Meetings, Administrative Council, and Children’s Ministry Committee.
The Primary Task:
There shall be a comprehensive approach to the development and implementation of the children’s ministry in all ministry areas of Centenary UMC. This comprehensive approach is based on the understanding of the primary task of children’s ministry to:
Love children where they are
Encourage children in developing their relationship to God
Provide them with opportunities for nurture and growth
Challenge them to respond to God’s call to serve in their families and world
Support, enable, and work in Partnership with families to best raise the children up in faith
Be an advocate for children and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns and needs of children and the children’s ministry. Invite and include congregation in their role of children’s ministry
Plan, develop, organize, and implement all aspects of a balanced children’s ministry. This includes serving as Sunday School Superintendent, family events, service projects, holiday parties, VBS, and Junior church.
Support and guide the work of the Children’s Ministry Committee
Be aware of resources for developing the children’s ministry programming and participate in continuing education events and training opportunities.
Recruit and train volunteers who work with children in all aspects of the ministry and ensure adequate volunteer support, adult to children ratios, and safe-sanctuary policy (child protection policy)
Coordinate Sunday School curriculum for children (Preschool through Grade 6) and recruit/train teachers
Be organized and manage the children’s ministry budget
Communicate in a timely manner (especially to parents, Pastor, and congregation) as effectively as possible using all available resources (email, website, bulletin, newsletter, bulletin board, etc.)
Be approachable. Make yourself available to children and their families
Work as a team with Centenary staff members and maintain a teamwork mentality.
Qualifications and Aptitudes:
Must embrace Christian discipline and faith.
Experience in children’s ministry, work with and loving children
Must have vision and a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, delegate, encourage, manage, and implement a children’s ministry
Be comfortable in front of others, display self-confidence, assertiveness and be energetic
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, computer and technological skills, and experience with social networking
Must possess a proven ability to work effectively with children, diverse individuals and teams of volunteers
