Cosley Zoo Summer Teen Volunteer

General Purpose

To assist Cosley Zoo’s Education staff by sharing educational messages with the public, utilizing animal artifacts, and other visual displays.

Qualifications

Applicants must be 13 through 18 years old. Animal and people experience a plus. Must be enthusiastic and interested in meeting, working, and communicating with many types of people.

Essential Duties

Must be able to attend required orientation and training on designated dates in May and June. Each Summer Teen Volunteer must commit to a 2.5 hour shift each week from June through August.

Educate visitors about wildlife through informal teaching, answering questions, and explaining exhibits.

Provide informal educational presentations for zoo visitors using biofacts and props.

Interact with the public offering education, information, and assistance when necessary.

Communicate openly with assigned staff to allow for a more well-rounded experience.

Must follow, administer, and implement Cosley Zoo and Wheaton Park District policies and guidelines set forth in the Volunteer Handbook.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with fund-raisers and special events if interested.

Assist with Discovery Stations.

Psychological Considerations

May feel stress while dealing with difficult members of the public. Must be comfortable working with large groups of people.

Physical Demands

Stand, climb, bend, and stoop for long periods of time. Must be able to tolerate odors, dust, and animal feces.

Cognitive and Safety Considerations

Must be able to follow directions and demonstrate good safety awareness and judgment.
